Fudan University Law School Profile

As a classic discipline of social sciences with a profound history and lasting vigor, law is the learning of rules and rights, of administration and fairness, and more importantly, of governance and justice. In A.D. 1088, the birth of the world’s first law school in Bologna heralded a new era when few institution could be named a “university” without the subject of law or law school.

Fudan Law School’s history of over 80 years has witnessed a large number of her people, law scholars and practitioners, assuming responsibilities to struggle for morality and justice, such as ZHANG Zhirang, the lawyer who defended the patriotic “Seven Gentlemen”; WANG Chonghui, the scholar-official who participated in drafting the UN Charter; MEI Ruao, the only Chinese judge in the International Military Tribunal for the Far East; and YANG Zhaolong, one of the fifty outstanding Jurists around the world selected by the International Court of Justice in Hague. Since the reestablishment of her legal education in the 1980s, Fudan Law School has been characteristic in training students to be “skillful in law, fluent in English, and knowledgeable in economy.”

As a part of the academic ecological environment of Fudan University, the Law School has constantly recruited outstanding legal scholars. There are not only practice-oriented mentors who have made extraordinary services for the country and society, but also research-oriented educators who are highly inspirational and experienced in teaching. In the era of globalization, with increasing emphasis on the rule of law, Shanghai has accelerated its construction of “the three centers of international finance, trade and shipping”, bringing Fudan Law School enormous opportunities of transformation and development. The Name of the University

Initially known as "Fudan College", Fudan University was founded in the year 1905. "Fudan", literally meaning "(heavenly light shines) day after day", indicates inexhaustible self-reliance and industriousness.

Schools and Research Institutes:

Fudan consists of 28 schools and departments, with seventy undergraduate disciplines. The University confers bachelor's degrees in seventy academic disciplines, and master's degrees in two hundred and twenty nine disciplines (with fifty-one of them established by the University itself), and doctoral degrees in twenty-four Level I and one hundred and fifty-four Level II academic disciplines (with thirty of them established by the University itself). There are also twenty-nine research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships.

Students:

Fudan now has an enrollment of 26,362 full-time degree candidates. Another 18,664 are studying at the schools of Continuing Education and Online Education. Besides, the University's population of foreign students is 3,633 today.

Faculty:

Fudan boasts a qualified faculty of over 2,678 full-time teachers and researchers, including 1,400 full professors and associate professors, 36 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 53 chair professors and 30 lecture professors of the Cheungkong Scholars Program, 17 chief scientists of Project 973. In the recent years, the University has been proactive in recruiting youthful strengths and optimizing the echelon of its faculty. Fudan has ten teaching hospitals, such as Zhong-shan (Dr. Sun Yat-san) Hospital and Hua-shan (Mount Lotus) Hospital, which offer quality medical service to the general public, conduct clinical education to student doctors and perform advanced scientific researches.

Goal:

The single and solitary goal of Fudan is to cultivate more and more all-round talents for modern China. Emulating the other successful institutions of tertiary and quaternary education at home and abroad, the University has been carrying out a series of daring experiments to integrate the various disciplines of learning and to utilize the abundant resources of a comprehensive university. After years of exploring and practicing, Fudan has now established its own curriculum and management system, both of which are unique and progressively improving.

Fudan University Law School LL.M. Program

Eligibility

Each eligible applicants must be a non-Chinese citizen with a valid passport, in good health, holding a bachelor’s degree and meeting the English language requirements. 

Applicants whose native language is not English must prove their English proficiency, e.g., possessing a TOEFL (iBT) score of 90 or above / an IELTS score of 6.5 or above. 

Applicants who have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree taught in English in a majority native English speaking country, will not normally need to provide TOEFL or IELTS score.

LL.M. Introduction

(1) The University

Initially known as “Fudan College”, Fudan University was founded in the year of 1905. “Fudan”, literally meaning “(heavenly light shines) day after day”, indicates inexhaustible self-reliance and industriousness. In 2000 Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University merged and since then Fudan University has been a comprehensive and research oriented university that offers degree programs in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and medical sciences.

Located in the commercial and financial center of China - Shanghai, Fudan University is a preeminent and prestigious university in China. Perfectly combining its profound tradition and comprehensive modernization, Fudan University ranks among top five universities in mainland China. Each year, Fudan University enrolls nearly 2000 students from overseas.

(2) The Law School

As one of the top law schools in China, Fudan Law School (FLS) has impressive profound history of legal education for 100 years as well as its huge progress in recent years. It has been characteristic in training students to be “skillful in law, fluent in English, and knowledgeable in economy.” FLS has witnessed a large number of her students assuming responsibilities to struggle for morality and justice, such as Dr. WANG Chonghui, the scholar-official who participated in drafting the UN Charter; MEI Ruao, the only Chinese judge in the International Military Tribunal for the Far East; and YANG Zhaolong, one of the fifty outstanding Jurists around the world selected by the International Court of Justice in the Hague.

FLS has four degree programs instructed in Chinese: Ph.D. in law, Master of Laws (LL.M.), Juris Master (J.M.), and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). The School also has a post-doctoral program. The teaching and research teams have been renowned domestically and internationally in a wide range of subjects. Today, there are more than 1900 students, including around 200 international students in FLS.

(3) The Program

Since the fall of 2010, Fudan Law School has launched an English-instructed program -

Since the fall of 2010, Fudan Law School has launched an English-instructed program - LL.M. in Chinese Business Law, especially for foreign lawyers, executives, students, and professionals engaging in international trade and/or interested in Chinese business and financial law.

Non-Chinese citizens, who have received a first college degree and have a good command of English, are eligible to apply for this program. LL.M. degree will be granted to the candidates who have successfully completed the required courses and a thesis.  

Each LL.M. student must complete 30 credits during two-semester course study in the first year. Generally, the fall semester lasts from late August through December, and the spring semester from late February through June. After completing the course study, students need submit a graduation thesis and pass the oral defense up to four years since the enrollment in order to receive the degree. Students may complete the thesis at Fudan or at any other place as long as they will be present for the oral defense. Students who have successfully completed one or two semesters’ course work but decide not to write the thesis will instead receive a certificate.  

Each LL.M. student will be assigned an academic advisor for study and thesis writing. In addition, Fudan Law School will arrange regular academic and extra-curricular activities for both foreign students and Chinese students so that they may interact with each other.

The faculty of Fudan Law School includes both nationally and globally well-known scholars. The faculty for LL.M. program in Chinese Law consists of 23 scholars in possession of experience and good reputation within their fields, which include civil law, commercial law, economic law, intellectual property, international law, criminal law, administrative law, constitutional law and jurisprudence.
