Xiamen University Law School Introduction

Bearing in mind our university’s Motto of “Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection”, centering on talents cultivation, and following the goal of academic prosperity, XMU Law School has developed its own characteristics in disciplinary construction. At present, XMU Law School is qualified for conferring master and doctor degree (PhD) in first-level of discipline of law. It offers Postdoctoral Research Program and Juris Master Program with individualized and specialized focuses. Among them, the International Law Studies – approved as Key Discipline at national level– ranks within top three in China. Additionally, civil & commercial law, economic law, constitutional law and administrative law were approved as Key Disciplines at provincial level. XMU Law School also offers International Master Program of Chinese Law for oversea students. Each year there are many summer schools for specific subjects of law held by Xiamen Law School.

Presently, Xiamen Law School has 8 teaching & research sections, i.e., jurisprudence, constitution & administrative law, civil & commercial law, criminal law, economic law, procedural law, international law and legal history, 5 institutes, i.e., the International Economic Law Institute, the Civil & Commercial Law Institute, the Roman Law Institute, the Intellectual Property Institute and South China Sea Institute, as well as 9 research centers, i.e., the Center for International Tax Law & Comparative Taxation, the Center for Oceans Policy and Law and Management of the Chinese Southeastern Waters, the Center for Public Law, the Center for Juridical Reform, the Center for Economic Law, the Center for Financial Law, the Center for Japanese Law, the Center for legislative Science and the Center for Environment Law. 

Xiamen Academy of International Law (Xiamen Academy), was established in XMU Law School after the first meeting of the Curatorium held in the Peace Palace, The Hague, in July 2005. It is an international institution aiming to provide highest level education to individuals who are particularly sensitive to the development and use of international law, such as young lecturers in international law, diplomats, practitioners of law, government officials in charge of foreign affairs, and officials in international organizations. Each year Xiamen Academy will hold a summer program, in which many world-renowned international lawyers will give excellent lectures on various topics of international law.

XMU Law School has also published its own academic journals, i.e., Xiamen University Law Review, Journal of International Economic Law and China Ocean Law Review, which have all received common recognition from the academia in China.

XMU Law School owns very good teaching facilities. The whole School occupies more than 10,000 square metres, among which 8,235 square metres are for capital construction of the buildings. XMU School owns an office building, two teaching buildings, multi-media classrooms and standardized case-study classrooms. XMU Library not only owns an abundant collection of legal books and materials, but also introduced and developed some important legal databases. In 1998, a separate law library was established, which has also been approved to be a UN depository library.

Xiamen University Law School International Master Program

Students enrolled will gain an in-depth knowledge of Chinese law and the ability to analyze and settle relevant practical legal problems independently.

Entry Requirements

Prospective students should have a non-Chinese passport and be in good health

Academic requirements: Prospective students must hold a recognized bachelor’s degree or above, or equivalent

English proficiency: Applicants should present a TOEFL certificate with 80 points or above, or an IELTS certificate with grade 6.0 or above, or other certificate of English proficiency from an accredited test. Native English speakers and applicants who have taken courses in English during their bachelor's degree studies are exempt from this requirement, but a medium-of-instruction certificate should be furnished.

Professional backgrounds: Prospective students who are able to show relevant professional experience deemed appropriate to the program applied for will be given prior consideration.

Dissertation

The dissertation shall reflect the candidate’s serious and prudent attitude and indicate his/her ability to carry out creative scientific research and to settle important practical problems independently. Specific requirements are as follows:

  • Select a topic with theoretical significance or practical value.
  • Present arguments with persuasive ground and good reasoning, and give independent opinions;Creation in terms of conception, viewpoint and research method is encouraged.
  • Show a reasonable structure, clear arrangements, logical reasoning, properly detailed and brief layout, and fluent expression.
  • Based on full and accurate materials.
  • Present uniform and standardized format and annotation.
